Each autumn, the Dean’s Office decides on the framework for the coming year’s admissions to all the faculty’s degree programmes. The decision is made in consultation with the faculty leadership team and the study boards. This involves establishing:
Breakdown of quota 1 and quota 2 for Bachelor’s degree programmes and Bachelor of Engineering programmes.
Academic admission requirements – in addition to the area-specific admission requirements stipulated in the Admissions Order.
Academic selection criteria for Master’s degree programmes with restricted admission.
Suspension of admission to certain degree programmes, if required.
The number of admissions for the Bachelor’s degree programmes and the Bachelor of Engineering programmes may be adjusted once the application figures are available after 5 July. Adjustment are made in consultation with the director of studies and the department, based on demand, capacity etc. .
For Master’s degree programmes and MScEng programmes, the academic admission requirements are determined by the board of studies (stated in the academic regulations). The Dean’s Office is responsible for any degree programme resizing and any suspension of admission to Master’s degree programmes and MScEng programmes, in collaboration with the implicated departments.
The decisions are based on:
Capacity (physical facilities, teaching capacity)
The ministry’s guidelines for degree programme resizing
The key admissions figures are discussed by the following forums:
By the faculty leadership team in order to assess the situation from the point of view of finances, planning, need for political initiatives, need for recruitment initiatives, resizing.
By the boards of studies in order to assess trends and discuss future recruitment.
By the education committees with a view to planning the welcoming of new students in terms of capacity (premises, lecturers, pedagogics) and possible recruitment initiatives.
At the annual dialogue meetings and the evaluations every five years.
All applicants, both quota 1 and quota 2, must meet the applicable admission requirements for the programme they are applying for: They must have passed a qualifying examination and meet the specific admission requirements for the degree programme concerned.
Quota 2 applicants are assessed on the basis of an average of particularly relevant quota 2 subjects as well as the result of an entrance examination carried out in March.
Admissions to Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes (including diploma and MScEng programmes) are handled by AU Student Administration and Services.
The Studies Administration and the heads of degree programmes handle any counselling or academic assessment of applicants in connection with admissions. The employees responsible for the international students at Technical Sciences are responsible for assessing applicants with international academic qualifications (exchange).
The vice-dean for education awards free places and scholarships to a number of full-degree students.
