Academic guidance

From the day they start their studies and until they submit their Master’s thesis, students at Technical Sciences encounter a wide range of people who support their learning processes and choices through academic guidance.

On the individual courses, the material will typically be introduced through presentations by lecturers with development experience and academic staff members , while students will work with the material in greater depth in calculation and practical exercises overseen by lecturers with development experience, academic staff members and teaching assistants (student instructors), who are typically older students or PhD students. The lecturers at Technical Sciences are generally easily accessible, and students can approach them for guidance both in and outside the classroom.

Many degree programmes include courses or exercises that, already on the Bachelor’s degree programme, introduce the students to relevant academic areas of development and research environments, providing inspiration for their choice of academic direction. In connection with Bachelor’s projects and R&D projects, a supervisor is assigned from among staff members with development experience or the academic staff members, while for thesis projects, a supervisor is assigned from among the academic staff members. The supervisors provide individual academic guidance to the student. Students being supervised by academic staff members will also often receive academic guidance from other employees in the research environments they are affiliated with.

Information regarding academic specialisations, choice of supervisor etc. is available on the study portals for the individual degree programmes, while the formal framework is described in the academic regulations. The compulsory programmes for the individual degree programmes are stated in the academic regulations and can also be viewed on bachelor.au.dk and kandidat.au.dk. Students can access detailed information about individual courses, including the intended learning outcomes and academic prerequisites, in course descriptions published in the course catalogue.

The head of degree programme or the student counsellor for the degree programme is responsible for guiding students regarding their study programme, academic specialisation and electives. Students who need help planning the progression of their study programme can contact the Student Counsellors’ Office.
