The objective of orientation isto welcome new students to their new degree programmes in an inclusive, informative and friendly manner. Student orientation is to:
Provide students with a good starting point for their social and academic integration in the degree programme, thereby setting the best possible conditions for a successful course of study and completion of the programme.
Facilitate the transition to university by providing new students with the necessary support and by introducing them to the study skills required to complete a university degree at Health.
Students
At Health, we work on the basis of the goals listed below, which the students should achieve during student orientation.
At the end of student orientation, students will:
Lecturers contribute to student orientation by offering introductory lectures or attending meetings to welcome new students.
Lecturers are responsible for introducing new students to the course, learning outcomes and expectations of working methods on the course.
Boards of studies and directors of studies
We regularly evaluate student orientation on all our degree programmes. The evaluations are discussed in the various boards of studies, and the boards of studies can make recommendations and requests in the time leading up to the next student orientation.
The Student Counsellors' Office at Health coordinates student orientation on all degree programmes.
Once new students have been admitted to the programme, they receive a welcome letter with a link to information about the orientation programme, the programme for the intro days, etc. We also invite students to take part in AU's introductory programme: Study@au.
In practice, the hosts for the new students are older students who have signed up as student advisers. The student advisers draw up a programme and organise the intro days and weekend trip. This is to help establish a good social foundation on the degree programme and help prepare students for their first classes.
Some degree programmes also have mentors. The mentors are older, experienced students. The purpose of mentors is to give new students a possibility to discuss any issues, exchange experience and reflect on what it means to be a student.
We assure and develop the quality of orientation programmes for new students using questionnaires:
The Student Counsellors’ Office prepares a questionnaire for the entire orientation programme.
The student advisers conducts an separate evaluation of the intro days and weekend trip.
