Organisation of teaching

Course administration

The planning of teaching activities at the faculty is registration-based, i.e. the planning is based on what is known about students’ registrations. We strive to make all student registrations possible.

Timetabling is based on the principle that teaching must be planned for Mondays to Thursdays between the hours of 8:00–18:00 and Fridays between the hours of 8:00–16:00. Only in exceptional cases can teaching take place on a Saturday and always subject to agreement with the lecturer(s) involved. Furthermore, the aim is for teaching activities, especially during the first semesters of the Bachelor’s degree programmes, to take place at or near the department in order to contribute to the development of the local study environment.

When allocating classrooms, the aim is to utilise the available classroom capacity in the best possible way, i.e. to reduce overcapacity relative to student numbers. Students are given the opportunity to change classes among themselves if the relevant lecturer approves the change.

Phases of course administration

  1. The main cross-disciplinary courses are planned first. The large classrooms/lecture theatres are often booked for lectures for these courses.
  2. Courses with specific requirements, such as a need for laboratory space, are also planned early in the process.
  3. Master’s degree courses, for which fewer students usually register, are often planned last.
  4. To the extent possible, account is taken of any wishes expressed by the departments on behalf of individual lecturers. The department reports any wishes before the start of the planning process.
  5. A preliminary teaching schedule is sent to the departments 1-1½ months before publication of the finalised timetable. The purpose of the preliminary teaching schedule is to invite feedback from the departments and to make adjustments before publishing the finalised teaching schedule.
