From the day they start their studies and until they submit their Master’s thesis, students at Natural Sciences encounter a wide range of people who support their learning processes and choices through academic guidance.
On the individual courses, the material will typically be introduced through lectures by academic staff members, while students will work with the material in greater depth in smaller groups taken by teaching assistants (student instructors), who are typically older students or PhD students. The lecturers at Natural Sciences are generally easily accessible and students can approach them for guidance both in and outside the classroom.
Many degree programmes include courses or exercises that, already on the Bachelor’s degree programme, introduce the students to academically relevant research environments, providing inspiration for their choice of academic direction. In connection with Bachelor’s projects, individual projects and Master’s theses, the student is assigned a supervisor from among the academic staff members to provide them with individual academic supervision. Students will also often receive academic guidance from other employees in the research environments they are affiliated with.
Information regarding academic specialisations, choice of supervisor etc. is available on the study portals for the individual degree programmes, while the formal framework is described in the academic regulations. The compulsory programmes for the individual degree programmes are stated in the academic regulations and can also be viewed on bachelor.au.dk and kandidat.au.dk. Students can access detailed information about individual courses, including the intended learning outcomes and academic prerequisites, in course descriptions published in the course catalogue.
The head of degree programme for each individual degree programme is responsible for guiding students regarding their study programme, including professional specialisation and electives. Students who need help planning the progression of their study programme can contact the Student Counsellors’ Office.
