Student guidance and student welfare counselling

Professional support for students during their studies

Student Counselling and Study Information at Natural Sciences, commonly referred to as the Student Counsellors’ Office, consists of an administrative officer, permanent student welfare counsellors and student counsellors (part-time student workers), student assistants and student ambassadors.

The Student Counsellors’ Office offers guidance to all students and potential students and, in accordance with the principles for student counselling at Aarhus University, supports:

  • (future) students in making carefully considered choices of degree programme based on knowledge of the academic content, requirements, the study environment and career prospects
  • students in becoming socially and academically integrated into their degree programmes during their first year of study
  • students in making relevant and informed choices during their course of study
  • students developing the ability and skills needed to cope with study-related challenges
  • the creation of a pleasant study environment characterised by well-being in the academic environments and on campus in general
  • the sharing of knowledge about student behavioural patterns with the academic environments, thereby contributing to improving the quality of degree programmes
  • efforts to make it easy for potential and current students to gain an overview of the job and career opportunities arising from individual degree programmes

This support is provided in close collaboration between Student Counselling and Study Information, the Studies Administration, AU Student Administration and Services, the Dean’s Office and the academic environments, and it includes initiatives such as:

  • Planning and participating in recruitment events for potential students
  • Ensuring relevant and accessible degree programme information
  • Sharing knowledge and management information with the academic environments on students’ programme completion, well-being and perceived study competencies
  • Collective and individual guidance activities to support student well-being, retention and programme completion

Student and academic guidance are linked

Students can contact a student counsellor if they need to make changes to their study programme. The student counsellors can help put together an individual course of study for the student. Students wanting to change their study programme are often not thriving, and the student counsellors and student welfare counsellors can help address problems relating to student well-being, and at the same time advise students on the possibility of applying for dispensations. If a student needs other support and guidance, it is the job of the student counsellors to refer them to relevant help. For example, special educational support (SPS), the Student Counselling Service etc.

The student counsellors and the student well-being counsellors at Natural Sciences offer sessions for students at the following locations: Katrinebjerg, Hangøvej, Ny Munkegade and at Navitas.
