Range of degree programmes and study spaces offered

Each autumn, the Dean’s Office decides on the framework for the coming year’s admissions to all the faculty’s degree programmes. The decision is made in consultation with the faculty leadership team and the study boards. This involves establishing:

  • Number of admissions and possible admission restriction

  • Breakdown of quota 1 and quota 2 for Bachelor’s degree programmes

  • Academic admission requirements – in addition to the area-specific admission requirements for the natural science degree programmes determined in the admissions order

  • Academic selection criteria for Master’s degree programmes with restricted admission.

  • Suspension of admission to certain degree programmes, if required.

  • Admission figures for the Bachelor’s degree programmes can be adjusted when information about applicant numbers is available after 5 July. Adjustments are made in consultation with the director of studies and the department, based on demand, capacity etc.

For Master’s degree programmes, the academic admission requirements are determined by the board of studies (stated in the academic regulations). The Dean’s Office is responsible for degree programme resizing and any suspension of admissions to Master’s degree programmes, in consultation with the departments concerned.

Basis

The decisions are based on:

  • Employment situation among graduates

  • Capacity (physical facilities, teaching capacity)

  • Key figures regarding admissions and courses of study. See annual planning cycle for key figures.

  • The ministry’s guidelines for degree programme resizin

The key admissions figures are discussed by the following forums:

  • By the faculty leadership team in order to assess the situation from the point of view of finances, planning, need for political initiatives, need for recruitment initiatives, resizing.

  • By the boards of studies in order to assess trends and discuss future recruitment.

  • By the education committees with a view to planning the welcoming of new students in terms of capacity (premises, lecturers, pedagogics) and possible recruitment initiatives.

  • At the annual dialogue meetings and the evaluations every five years.
