The first year of study

A good orientation programme for first-year students is important.

Aarhus University therefore offers new students an introduction to their degree programme and the university aiming for successful academic and social integration.

Orientation programmes are anchored at the faculties and centred on the students. This is to ensure that orientation activities are closely linked with the students’ degree programmes, which is important.

Orientation programmes are organised differently according to the various needs at degree programme level and the four main target groups: Bachelor's and professional degree programmes, Master's degree programmes, part-time degree programmes and international students.

Orientation at Aarhus University is viewed as one coherent process from choice of degree programme, over admission, to the end of the 2nd semester, with a very intense period in the orientation programme, i.e. the weeks before the first classes begin.

The purpose of orientation is:

  • To ensure a carefully considered choice of degree programme based on knowledge about educational opportunities, and the content, academic requirements and expectations of specific degree programmes
  • To support the transition from upper secondary school to university
  • To create the best conditions for student well-being and learning
  • To ensure that students experience a sense of belonging to the university and create an identity as students
  • To ensure that students establish good study skills and working habits to help them progress in their studies
  • To establish academic and social communities
  • To ensure that all students are integrated academically and socially on their degree programmes
